On January 7, Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin confirmed that the country has detected cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection, but reassured people that the disease is not dangerous.

In an announcement on the official website of the Ministry of Health, Minister Budi said reports showed that some children had been infected with the virus and the government was closely monitoring the situation.

He emphasized that this is not a new disease and has appeared in Indonesia since 2001.

He noted that the disease has symptoms similar to the common flu and anyone can get it if the immune system is weakened.

He therefore urged everyone to maintain a healthy and hygienic environment, get enough rest and exercise regularly.

Previously, Ministry of Health spokesman Widyawati also called on people to take preventive measures to reduce the risk of spread.
